We had a strange weather week here in Frankfurt. For a city that doesn’t know how to deal with snow (waiting for it to melt seems to be the preferred clean up method), we’ve had a heck of a winter. And just when we thought that it was over, mother nature decided to send a spring snowfall. It buried all the pretty crocuses and daffodils and brought the airport to a standstill. As I type this post, more big heavy flakes are falling.
What better week for a nice warming bowl of soup. Yes, it was perfect timing actually for this week’s French Fridays with Dorie recipe, Orange-Scented Lentil Soup.
Now, I’m a big fan of lentil soup and was looking forward to giving Dorie’s version a try, though I was admittedly a bit skeptical about the orange-scented bit (which Dorie achieves by adding a healthy piece of orange peel to the mix). She also calls for Puy lentils, a household favorite which are always to be found in my cupboard. These little slate green lentils are simply delicious.
Otherwise, there were no more surprises in the soup and it was easy enough to pull together. I topped mine with a dollop of goat cheese and declared it to be delicious. The orange flavor was noticeable but not overwhelming. Really good in fact. This may be my new lentil soup recipe.
I always have an impossible time finding lentils de puy, even back home in the states. It doesn’t seem like it should be so hard to find, given how many recipes specify them. Your soup looks tasty, and would be the perfect thing for a snowy day. Hope the sun comes out soon!

The transition from winter to spring is fickle, isn’t it? My yard starts to thaw and then it snows. We have a few days above freezing and then we get a string of days below freezing. I never know what I am going to wake up to 🙂
I am very glad that Dorie introduced me to French lentils – they have become a favorite in our house. I even dedicated a mason jar to them…
For us, summer has arrived. Thankfully! Soup is good any time…especially when it’s cold, and also, for us, when we need to eat more healthy…which is usually. This soup took away our guilt that came with a sugary weekend…it came at a good time.
I used regular lentils, since du puy are hard to find. And didn´t puree it. And added more orange and coriander. So I changed it a bit, jaja. Glad you liked it so much, and it is great for cold weather!
Rose, really sounds like you enjoyed your lovely bowl of lentil soup – you are right, it was just the right kind of soup to enjoy while the snow was falling outside – certainly worth many, many repeats!

Hopefully your tulips and daffs will spring back up when the snow begins to melt and the sun reappears. Those two flowering plants seem to be very resilient. Loved seeing your German packaging of Puy Lentils. In America we have to find them in high-end grocery stores, speciality cuisine shops or order on-line. They are now considered run-of-the-mill legumes. I liked this soup as well and felt the addition of ginger and orange was delicious.
We’ve had a few days of snow here as well! However, our road crews are great in the snow! And just when you expect Spring around the corner, another snow fall is forecasted for this week!

Your soup looks so delicious, perfect for a snowy day. Except for the look, this seemed to go over well with everyone. It’s fun to see the various garnish that people use, and they all work well.

I had to chuckle at the Frankfurt preferred method of snow removal. Soup is so perfect for snowy weather, unusual or not. Ever since I discovered Puy lentils, they’ve been my favorites, both in soup and salad or probably any other way. Yum!
I felt like doing a jig in the aisle when I found the Puy lentils – I told my son who was shopping with me that I needed them for Nana and myself for a Dorie recipe and he was happy for us. Or perhaps happy for himself as he enjoys the product of each French Friday 🙂 And we have been having a similar March in Pennsylvania. Seems like it is warm one day and then we have snow, which doesn’t stick very long but makes one want soup, or homemade bread….or brownies. I love this time of year…..the in between that is perfect for nesting and cooking.
