Happy Thanksgiving! This is my very favorite holiday of the year and I hope all my fellow americans are enjoying their turkeys, cranberries, and pies.
As for me? Well, since we obviously do not celebrate Thanksgiving in Germany, today is a work day like any other. So no turkey and stuffing for me tonight. But this expat simply cannot imagine skipping Thanksgiving alltogether, so on Saturday we will have some friends over and serve all my holiday favorites. I can’t wait!
In the meantime, this week was cook’s choice over at French Fridays with Dorie, meaning that each of us gets to choose whatever recipe we want. As I flipped through the book, trying to figure out what to pick, I felt like a little kid in a candy store. One year in, there
are still so many amazing recipes yet to be tackled and it was really quite difficult to narrow it down. But in the end, practicality won out, and I decided that with all the other cooking and eating to be done this week, my French Friday recipe needed to be something light and easy.
Ok, so in the end the Potato Chip Tortilla was easy, but not so light. For some reason I had this idea that there would be a little handful of chips in this dish and not the full bag. That’ll teach me not to read the ingredient list more carefully. I was actually a little sad because salty snacks are a weakness of mine and I was so looking forward to munching on the leftovers. Normally I can’t keep chips in the house because, while my husband has absolutely no self-restraint when it comes to sweets, he is bizarrely immune to chips and other salty snacks and then I end up eating the whole darn bag myself. Never a good thing!
There were so many chips in this recipe that they kind of took over the egg mixture. In fact, as I was stirring it all together, I had to reread the ingredient list about ten times to make sure that I had gotten the amounts right. It just really didn’t look like it was going to work.
But then in the pan it somehow all came together, the eggs managed to absorb all the chips and come out looking like a spanish tortilla. I should have learned by now to trust Dorie. Paired with a simple salad it made a very tasty lunch. And while it may not have been as light as I’d first thought, no worries, I still have plenty of room for pie 🙂

This looks wonderful. I am so hoping this makes it on December’s schedule. I have the opposite problem as you do though because it is hard to keep a bag of chips around with my husband. He devours them so fast! I hope you have a great time celebrating with your friends this weekend!

We don’t often have chips in the house – it’s one of those things I am either strongly craving or not interested in at all.. But I can see where this idea would be VERY appealing in the midst of a “crave” cycle 🙂

Though I love the concept of this dish, I’ve been scared away from it, because it seems like a real easy way for me to inhale a bag of potato chips super fast, since i have little control with regular potato and egg tortillas, anyway. Looks great, though! I flaked on FFwD this week. My inlaws are here for the week, and I planned to catch up on that duck breast recipe, but i’m too cheap to buy enough for 4. HA! I’ll wait until they leave tomorrow.
I remember having all sorts of people over to Thanksgiving dinner when my dad was stationed in Naples. I think sharing Thanksgiving with friends makes it all the more special. I truly hope you enjoy every bit of it!

Wow you picked an intriguing recipe for sure! The tortilla does look very authentic and I want to give it a try too. But of course, there’s that little matter of a WHOLE bag of chips….decisions decisions.

Yes! Trust in Dorie! I had to trust in all the great comments a few weeks ago re: the duck so I made that this week. But this tortilla sounds quite good. I hope we get to it soon as i would love to serve it for lunch with salad as you have.

This tortilla looks great and I do love chips, so it has the potential to be superb, as you concluded. I’m certainly going to make this, but I’m not sure if I van wait until it’s on the planning. Happy thanksgiving.
This is such an interesting dish…looks and sounds great! I’m sure this would be a hit with both my husband and I. I also, never buy potato chips because it’s one of the only snacks that I will devour. Happy Thanksgiving!!

I’ve been wanting to make this one, so I’m glad to hear you gave it a good report. Hope your Saturday Thanksgiving feast went well. I definitely enjoyed my Thanksgiving turkey, cranberries, and pie. We went someone else’s house, so my only disappointment was that they didn’t serve mashed potatoes.

This looks quite intriguing… You would never guess by looking at your end result that it has potato chips in it! It’s looking like this will be one of the January recipes and now I am looking forward to it. 🙂
I’m just preparing for this week’s recipe and saw that you had made it in November. It’s good to have a sneak peek and although I thought there would be potato chips from scratch, it now looks as if I have to get myself a BIG bag of crispy chips for this!
