chicken couscous

No pictures today. Our internet connection has been acting up all week and the act of uploading a picture just seems to be too much. If our internet provider is listening… your days are numbered!

But moving on. Dorie’s Poultry chapter may well be my favorite in the book, which probably says more about my personal preferences than anything else. In fact, the Fish chapter is quickly catching up. But this week’s French Fridays with Dorie recipe, Chicken Couscous, left me a bit wanting, which again, I think says more about my personal preferences than anything else. My husband and I both agreed though, that the flavors were much improved by the second day and we enjoyed our leftovers more than the original. But still not one which we need to repeat.

I’m off to dinner with my valentine now. We’re trying a new place which is rather difficult to get into, and so instead of fighting the hoards on Valentines Day proper, we decided to celebrate a day early. Which reminds me of something which I read some years ago. Before I go any further I should preface this by saying that I can’t recall the exact source and the whole thing may well be nonsense. In any case, the story went that February 14th is the busiest day of the year for New York City restaurants, which is hardly surprising. But the piece then went on to explain that the second busiest day of the year for New York restaurants is February 13th, because that’s when all the mistresses and manstresses (it’s a word!) get taken out to dinner. So you can bet that tonight I’ll be looking around to see who else is there:-)

    Enjoy your evening and your people gazing 🙂 Since Monday is a holiday here, we opted to go out Sunday night.

    The poultry and fish sections were favorites of mine (as well as the vegetable – those gratined potatoes, yum!)

    Interesting bit about the day before the 14th! Yes, this dish is better the next day and hubby had the last of it for our V-day (in front of the TV) and with winter ceviche for starters!

    Everyone’s tastes are different. This was one of my favorite chicken recipes so far (though nothing compares to lazy person’s chicken). Hope you had a nice time out on the 13th. Anticipation of the snow kept us in for Valentine’s Day, but together we cooked up a special meal. I know you miss the snow, but I’ll bet you’d be weary by now if you were in New England this winter.     That is so funny! We actually really enjoyed this chicken dish.
    Mary’s here now & we just finished eating our Vanilla Braised Lobster! We served it with Risotto Milanese and spinach – it was SO good! I’m a huge fan of the Vanilla Butter.

    Tomorrow, when everyone is here, we’re going to have Carnitas (pork) tacos. It would be so lovely if you were here!

    Hope you enjoyed your night out- I am sure it was fabulous. This poor recipe did not do it for us but mostly because I simply was not in the mood for the combo of spices. On another day it is possible I will circle back. Now onward to lobster….:)

    You cannot leave us handing. Please give us a report on your February 13th dinner. Name names! I never knew that factoid but that’s why I belong to FFWD — to pick up information like that. I liked this chicken couscous from Day 1. However, I will agree, it got better with time. I made 1/2 a recipe but still made three meals out of it. All good. But, three times in a week was enough.

  13. Fun post Rose! Interesting bit about the 13th! We don’t often go out on Valentine’s Day because I can’t stand the crowds! I enjoyed this dish, but it did not go over well with my hubby! Oh well…there’s always next week!
